Plant tissues. Parenchyma.
STORAGE
Organ: root, storage parenchyma of root cortex.
Species: buttercup (Ranunculus repens).
Technique: 8 µm thick section stained with Alcian blue / safranin.

This figure shows root parenchyma cells with storage inclusions, probably starch, that appear as purple grains. Cells are rounded in shape, and have primary cell walls since they are stained in blue by blue Alcian dye. Some cells lack of storage material, but it can be a consequence of the histological process. Many empty intercellular space can be observed.

ANGULAR
Organ: stem, angular collenchyma.
Species: ivy (Hedera helix).
Technique: paraffin embedding, section stained with methylene blue.

In the angular collenchyma, the cell wall thickenings occur at the angles of the cell surface where several cells converge, hence the absence of intercellular spaces in this tissue. The thickenings are like pillars arranged longitudinally in the plant body, providing great mechanical resistance.
